So the question becomes how can parents teach their kids about how to stay away from "bad" stuff. Is this a 20th century lesson of don't talk to strangers or take candy from strangers in a new form?
\n
\nWe are asking for a level of responsibility of students that has never been done before.
\n
\nAm I just rambling....?
\n
\nProbably","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"19410993","body":"It would be nice if parents would start talking to their kids about sex! But many of them don't or won't. This is why we are doing it for them. Next week we'll be talking with the students again about cyber safety. It needs to be a discussion that happens every year at the beginning of the year. At least we'll be able to say to parents that we are doing our part.","dateCreated":"1264689187","smartDate":"Jan 28, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"scramer90","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/scramer90","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1270470116\/scramer90-lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"19071035","dateCreated":"1263949879","smartDate":"Jan 19, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"nstarner","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nstarner","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/bhsinspiration.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/19071035"},"dateDigested":1532428046,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Concerns","description":"I know that there is going to be a new class that is required to all freshmen starting next semester, and I was just wondering what all will be addressed in that class.
\n
\nSince teachers will be concerned with all the activity that this generates during class, can we address appropriate use of sites, when to use them, how to use them, etc?
\n
\nA lot of parents are already concerned with what computers open up to their children. Can we address the idea that getting on a website and meeting a man you don't know is not safe? If we are giving the students these wonderful tools for learning, we need to have some sort of responsible use education. This could give them knowledge of risks involved and strategies to prevent certain situations.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"19079807","body":"I agree. What would be nice is to have students "write" a handbook at the end of the course outlining these topics and the best way to approach them.
\n
\nAlthough, with 2.0 tools, will we really need to go that far? Do any of these sites that we may be interested in using need guidance in this area? Should this be a guidance concern? Not that I am putting this off on guidance but I am wondering what a semester class can effectively cover with so many important topics.","dateCreated":"1263983518","smartDate":"Jan 20, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"peglowjp","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/peglowjp","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1267297176\/peglowjp-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"19081761","body":"I am currently working with a few teachers to develop a "cyber safety" assembly. I did this last year too. This year the assembly will be during the first week of February. We'll cover cyber bullying, child pornography, "What is a stranger?", social networking, and a few other things. It went really well last year, and this year we are even doing it district wide (although the elementary schools aren't covering everything we are).
\n
\nBeth and I are doing a parents' night in February as well to teach them about the same topics. Considering how many homes already were connected to the internet before 1:1 I really wish the parents would educate their children...but they are not; perhaps because they don't understand either.","dateCreated":"1263993747","smartDate":"Jan 20, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"scramer90","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/scramer90","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1270470116\/scramer90-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"19724607","body":"Hey Steph - I thought this assembly was great! I sat in with the 10th graders to see what you were going to tell them, and it was very interesting! I think these assemblies should happen once every year from now on - just as a reminder to the students. But - some of these topics are things that could be discussed in more than one assembly. Maybe it could be more of a once a week class for a semester. I'm just throwing things out there - all of the topics that you covered are extremely important and while they deal with the computer, they are larger than life concepts that probably deserve a longer look.","dateCreated":"1265251168","smartDate":"Feb 3, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"nstarner","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nstarner","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"19812391","body":"I agree.
