Initial Question: Student Internet Access
-The firewall at school vs. the traveling firewall are different. Why is this? What exactly can they do at home that they can't do here?

Filter at school: all social networking sites closed. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as referenced below in Questions/Items to address before meeting. I asked if we can open blogs here at school. Concerns about blogs being public viewable content were mentioned. See my note below on public viewable content. There may be a way to "blog" here at school using the internal server to keep privacy. iChat most likely will not be opened again due to a concern with how much bandwidth it takes here at school .

Filter outside school:
many social networking sites open (MySpace, Facebook, email) There is an issue with Yahoo email not working. Jim was shocked to hear from D. Cramer that her daughter cannot access her Yahoo email. He will look into this further. I asked kids today(3-17-10) what they have access to at home on their laptops. They indicated that the firewall blocks MySpace, Facebook and yahoo, hotmail email accounts
(3-18-10) That is very interesting. I will pass this along to Jim as he believed they could access all of those.
- scramer90 scramer90 (3-22-10) I found out to day that all email and social networking is blocked outside of school as well. Jim is scared that a virus could be brought in to our network via email or facebook. Plus he feels this is something that should be done on a personal computer only.

So what's our point?
Let's make sure that we explain the difference between what we are doing now and what we want to do.
We need to collaborate to define phase II (including administration).
This is how we want to enhance student learning.

Questions/Items to Address Before the Meeting
-What has been asked or and what has been refused?

-What do other faculty members want? (So far what I am hearing from the faculty members I have asked is that they do not want anything new to learn. This is a bummer. Why do you think they feel like this?) I think there are some faculty members that are overwhelmed with 1:1 and LFS happening at about the same time. However, they will also rise to the occasion if the bar is raised.

- mcan mcan(using this method as I don't remember the colors of everyone sorry) -- anyway, teachers I have talked with are OK with and want some new things. Again, how it is given to the faculty is important. Teach them like we teach, chunking up concepts, etc - pick ONE thing at a time to introduce them to -- teach it to them and then add new material as they have mastered that. Again, not ALL will participate, and that is OK.

- scramer90 scramer90 Good to start with the wiki. Relatively easy to use. I've got the hang of the "shift tilde x3" now!

-What do we want to continue to block? Opening "everything" may not be desirable. Do we really want facebook to be open at school? If so, to what purpose?
Keeping some things blocked at school helps with classroom management.

-We need to use background information from other schools and grade levels (that use web 2.0 technology). Then we need to meet with them to see how they do it effectively and to ask other questions.
-We need to compare to studywiz. What can some of these programs do that studywiz cannot?
-Let's look for statistics that show student increased participation and motivation with the use of 2.0 tools and online collaboration.

(As previously mentioned) The web 2.0 apps that do things that studywiz cannot. We like studywiz, and want to keep it as long as possible.

Both of the above will require students to have a "real" email address. Do we want to add Gaggle to the list?

I have requested blogs to be opened. There is possibly a way to do blogs internally only.


(3-18-10) I am opening the blog feature in Studywiz for students on Monday, March 22nd. The deans are excited to see how the students do.

I am putting in a request for glogster.com to be allowed through. Glogster is an interactive "poster". Great for creativity as well as "just one more way a student can choose to present their information". I STRONGLY caution against gloster since there are several work arounds. Jason has used this in his classroom for two years now and the kids have finally found some large loop holes. Students are creating their own glogs on the gloster site and not on the glogster.edu site. Both versions are linked and cannot be separated at this time (unless Jim knows a way). There have been some students publishing very inappropriate content of themselves on the gloster site that the world is looking at. I am not sure we should add glogster to our list until the company, or Jim, can filter there sites better.

- mcan mcanI think with anything new, there will be violations. That is why the AUP is important and having students and parents signing the handout as they are aware of consequences if they violate policy is what will be the driving force for inappropriate behavior with the computer. For example going onto glogs and doing noneducational things will result in whatever is in the AUP.


Post Dream Team Communications
In the future, after this meeting with Dr. Eshbach, we also would like it to be known that Steph Cramer is really our go-to person to communicate the teachers' needs with technology. She is the teacher correspondent, and teachers should be able to bring up concerns and suggestions to her knowing that she will be able to get a response/answer.


Thoughts on public being able to view student created content

-We need to be prepared to voice our opinion on the concern with anyone in public being able to view student created content. Here are my thoughts, please add yours:

Steph thinks: One of the powerful 21st Century skills needed is that of publisher. We need to teach all students how to successfully publish content. Keep in mind, they are already publishers through Facebook and other websites.That being said, we also have the obligation to teach them how to do it appropriately and safely.

Cami thinks: Agreed. Many students are already online publishers, evening adding their own videos to youtube. They need to understand that what they post is viewable to the public, and if there is something that they do not want anyone and everyone to see, they shouldn't post it.
What is the actual blog feature on studywiz like. Has anyone used it? I know Steph said the Mrs. Hazlett has the kids "blogging," but I think we had discussed that this wasn't through the blog feature. Just curious.
The blog will be open starting Monday, March 22nd. Hazlett did fake blogging using the "discussion" feature in studywiz. The blog in studywiz is just a "page" where students can write down their thoughts. Starting Monday each student page will be viewable by anyone who has a studywiz account with BHS. A good stepping stone to going public. I'm a little confused. How did we get the blog open? Is this kinda what we want, to get things open a little bit at a time as to not overwhelm the teachers? I think we are moving in the right direction! - scramer90 scramer90 The blog was opened by me, Cramer. I can open it because it is part of Studywiz. However, as many students are already finding out, studywiz blog is somewhat difficult to maneuver through. The ultimate goal is to get to real blogging .
